Vermeil jewellery is created by electroplating the silver with gold, in a process that uses an electrical current to bind the two precious materials together. In order to be considered true vermeil jewellery, and not just gold dipped or plated, the pieces must meet strict qualifications.

 

Most large pieces that appear to be solid gold are actually vermeil gilded, such as many of the crown jewels. For larger pieces, vermeil jewellery has the benefit of being lighter as well as having durability. Gold vermeil jewellery is the highest quality gold toned jewellery available, short of solid gold.
